The 2016 Event

Charles Bennett Olympic Mile

With the Olympics once again taking place this summer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Shapwick will be celebrating the achievements of Charles Bennett by hosting a series of one mile races over the course of an afternoon, taking place on Saturday 13th August 2016, 2.00-5.00pm.

How Fast Can You Run a Mile?

Despite the growth in mass participation running events, opportunities to run a single mile are relatively limited so we are excited to offer runners of all abilities the opportunity to come and take part in this unique event in our scenic Dorset village. One mile really is a distance that anyone can have a go at, from joggers to elite athletes, children to veterans.

The Event

Based around the Charles Bennett Memorial Green on Stewards Lane in Shapwick, the races will take place on a flat one lap course on lanes (closed to traffic) around the village.

There will be teas, coffees, cakes and other refreshments on sale, with all proceeds going towards the upkeep of the Charles Bennett Memorial Green which was setup following the inaugural event in 2000. The Memorial Green also has a playground which is ideal to keep children entertained during the event!

All runners will be officially timed and results published on the website after the event.

The route is just over one lap of the village lanes starting just up from the Memorial Green, and finishing at the Memorial Green.

We are looking for as many volunteers as possible to assist on the day, please contact us if you are interested in helping.

The Race Schedule

There will be series of races taking place suitable for all abilities and ages, including children.
